Background: ITZ is a maiden concept in Pakistan and is characterized by the development of planned and well-managed tourist destinations for national and international tourists. The Integrated Tourism Zones (ITZs) are envisioned to be an integrated approach to tourism development that will act as catalysts and key tourism nodes for the province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with the goal of enhancing the tourism sector in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Department of Tourism (DoT) after thorough consultation with all stakeholders has identified 4 potential sites as an ITZ. · Ghanool, Manshera · Mankyal, Swat · Madaklasht, Lower Chitral · Thandiani, Abbottabad Regulatory Mechanism: The ITZs are regulated under the KP Culture & Tourism Act 2019 and the KP Culture & Tourism Authority (KP CTA) is implementing and managing ITZs. Master Planning: DoT through the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tourism Development Project (KITE) (World Bank funded) has conducted consultancy for “Feasibility Study & Master Planning of Integrated Tourism Zones (ITZ)” from Malaysian-based firm M/S APUDG. The scope of the consultancy was to conduct the identification of potential tourism areas within the ITZs, mapping of the area, spatial planning of the ITZ, Destination Management Plan, and Infrastructure Development plan through a phased approach.
