TREK (Travel Responsibility for Experiencing Eco-Tourism in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) is a key initiative under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Integrated Tourism Development (KITE) project, implemented in collaboration with the World Bank Group, KP Tourism Department and Nestle Pakistan. TREK aims to promote responsible tourism and sustainable waste management practices in the region. To date, over 2,500 participants from local government, development authorities, communities, academia, and the private sector have been trained in Solid Waste Management (SWM), hygiene, and nutrition across major tourist destinations like Peshawar, Galiyat, Abbottabad, Naran, Swat, and Chitral. TREK also launched awareness campaigns, including videos and radio ads on "Responsible Tourism," and distributed more than 6000 reusable carry bags to promote eco-friendly practices. Additionally, 27 signboards in Galiyat and Chitral highlight responsible tourism messages. In line with these efforts, feasibility studies and site surveys for waste management solutions are ongoing in areas such as Galyat, Kaghan, Kumrat, and Kalam.
KITE recognize the potential of KP tourism sector to advance prosperity & drive inclusive, sustainable development. Committed to its aim of making KP as "preferred and resposible tourism destination"
